Aiming to put the spotlight on movies with a strong storyline and content, irrespective of their box office performance, Sony Pictures Networks India Private Limited will be soon launching a new English movie channel, Sony Le PLEX HD.
The channel will serve the discerning audiences who seek entertainment beyond the mainstream movies from Hollywood, a statement said.
The network is in the process of seeking regulatory clearances and approvals. Subject to obtaining such approvals, the launch is planned in June.
The channel is expected to be launched with the premiere of Oscar-winning film “Spotlight”.
Filmmaker Tom McCarthy’s biographical drama film features Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams and Stanley Tucci in the lead.
“Spotlight” tells the true story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe investigation that rocks the city and causes a crisis in one of the world’s oldest and most trusted institutions – the Catholic Church.
When the newspaper’s tenacious “Spotlight” team of reporters delve into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, their year-long investigation uncovers a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston’s religious, legal and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world.
