Popular actress of tamil and telugu movies jyothi lakshmi passes away at 63

Popular southern actress Jyothi Lakshmi passed away here on Tuesday at age 63. According to industry sources, she died away undergoing treatment for blood cancer. “She was suffering from blood cancer for a while and had been undergoing a treatment. She passed away earlier this morning,” an industry source told IANS.

Having made her cinematic debut with the 1963 Tamil film Periya Idathu Penn at the age of 10, she went on to star mostly in dance numbers and negative roles. Jyothi starred in over 300 southern films, Telugu and Tamil films such as Pilla Pidagu, Bangara Babu and Gandharva Kanya. Her last on-screen appearance was in last year’s Tamil adult comedy Trisha Illana Nayanthara.

Besides acting in Telugu and Tamil movies, Jyothi has also worked in Kannada, Malyalam and Hindi movies. She made her debut with Periya Idathu Penn in 1963. Periya Idathu Penn is a 1963 Tamil drama film and was directed by T. R. Ramanna. The film, produced by, had musical score by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy and was released on 10 May 1963. The film was blockbuster, highest-grossing film of the year and ran more than 100 days.

She was a trained dancer and was well-known for her roles and songs in the movies. She has also acted in female-oreinted movies. In the early 1980s her popularity gradually declined due to her sister Jayamalini’s entry into the movie industry. Her Hindi movie include, Payal Ki Jhankar, Nai Roshni, Pistolwali and Naag Mani. Her Malyalam movies include Murappennu, Kunjaali Marakkaar, Nagarame Nandi, Inspector, Kodungallooramma, Alibabayum 41 kallanmaarum, Manushyamrigam and Thadavara.
