Dohchay is about a con man Chandu (Naga Chaitanya) who has taken up the onus of paying for his younger sister's education. She wants to be a doctor, so much so, that he literally has to get her a payment seat (irrelevant to the story but it would have been a nice touch of sincerity if she just got a good rank and her brother didn't have to do con jobs to arrange for close to several multiples of 20 lacs). Anyway, Chandu's dad (Rao Ramesh) is in jail for a crime he didn't commit and suffers from a heart problem. Now for the mindnumbing development. Apparently, Chandu has to pay the Home Minister's PA 5 lacs to ensure his dad gets treated and operated well. Apparently the PA has other standard rates like 2 crore rupees for getting his dad, serving life imprisonment, released early for good behaviour. Chandu stumbles upon that money without really pulling off any stunts. In fact, for a heist movie there are very few thrills and frills, hardly any tricks that you haven't seen in Telugu movies before, leave alone the smarter ones in other languages. Amidst all this is a love thread with Meera (Kriti Sanon) who looks gorgeous in every frame, almost making you wonder why a girl like that would take law into her hands to help a crook of a boy friend.
Dohchay has excellent production values, Richard Prasad giving the movie a bright, colorful look. The music by talented Sunny MR, although decent has the same 'feel' as Swamy Ra Ra and Rowdy Fellow, a sound that Sunny himself introduced to T-town. Sathya, Praveen, Saptagiri, Posani Krishna Murali and Brahmanand all have minor roles to play in the movie in a medley of comical scenes that at times are hilarious and at times flat.
Dohchay is a time-pass movie to stick to the lingo. It offers a fine medley of some comedy scenes, couple of duets, some witty one-lines, some chase sequences and a few party tricks. But beyond that, the movie is soulless, almost like the script and screenplay of the movie were extempore. The first half isn't even a build up for the second half and out of nowhere, you realise that the climax is an entirely parallel thread and rivalry different from the rest of the movie. While the makers might have seen that as a suspense element, the bigger picture is that it is just disconnected, bizarre and a little amateurish, especially coming from a director whose talent was out for everyone to see in his debut movie. From a CI arranging 4 crore rupees of his own money just to catch a crook to a washed out hero wasting 15 minutes of screen time to a villain who is just as confused about his role as the audience is to a character artist like Rao Ramesh wasted doing nothing more than cough, the script and screenplay are totally patchy.
