Filmmakers plan incubator for Telangana State movies

After waiting for Telangana state government to set-up Telangana Film Development Corporation, local filmmakers have now decided to help themselves. A group of prominent Telangana film activists are setting up Telangana Film Foundation (TFF) — an independent body that will finance movies made by filmmakers from Telangana. "Efforts are on to raise a corpus of Rs 10 crore for the purpose," informs Sanayadireddy, who is tipped to become the Chairman of the proposed TFF.

"Andhra-born financiers fund a majority of Telugu films being made. And many talented filmmakers from Telangana region struggle to find willing producers to back them. It is important to encourage deserving local filmmakers to develop a truly representative Telangana cinema. Our immediate target is to create a corpus of Rs 10 crore and scale it up gradually," says Sanayadireddy.

Filmmakers Allani Sridhar, Ramana Reddy, Akula Ramesh, Ram Satyanarayana and Amrish Kumar have been developing a roadmap for TFF. The plan is to create a friendly eco-system for Telangana cinema to thrive. "Once a script is approved, the TFF will help in budgeting, shooting and releasing the film. Many of our members have digital studios, so we will extend all help and the film would have a stamp of TFF on its posters," adds Allani Sridhar, who earlier directed Komaram Bheem.

"It's a welcome move as it will create a platform for young filmmakers to receive necessary financial support to explore Telangana-centric movies. And also, such a foundation could bring in prospective investors. Telangana has many rich entrepreneurs, but they think investing in films is a 'risky proposition' but they can join this kind of foundation and test the waters. Despite being talented, Telangana filmmakers have to cross three tough hurdles - production, distribution and exhibition - but if anyone is trying to ease the situation, it would be nice," says filmmaker Rafi.

"There are numerous stories that could be brought to the screen. I can reel out 25-odd scripts in a few minutes. There are legends like Kamalamma who left her infant at a doorstep while fighting the Nizam's army. There are great scripts on cultural festivities like Bathukamma and Bonalu, beside historical themes. Once the finances are sorted out, we can bring alive the stories of Telangana legends and inspire a new-generation," says National Award winning lyricist Sudala Ashok Teja, who is turning into a script writer.
